Originating from drawings of the train station, this work is developing the idea of line and form. Beginning with the initial drawing I wanted to create a multimedia piece so I basically experimented by using all the sweets in the jar: biro; water colour; brusha; charcoal; oil pastels; glue; ink. I admit, I was pushing my limits, never having used these materials before, but what the heck!

I had in mind the notion of railway stations as hopeful places leading to somewhere better, happier, brighter? In any case, it takes me away from this place to a positive future. So, the work became livelier and grew into a kind of landscape where the elements of form and structure such as the tracks and roofs became more like trees, fields and hills. There is a hymn I’m reluctant to sing about mills in green fields. It reminds me of this work where the industrial Victorian railway becomes something organic and natural. I call the picture Jerusalem.

I’m more confident about the next step. I took the work to Photoshop and began layering, keeping the original elements of the track and platform. I had the idea that I wanted to put a person in the picture. Maybe he’s an immigrant coming to what he thinks is the Promised Land. Maybe he’s Christ (with glasses and a hat)! Or maybe he’s just a guy waiting for the train. If you look into the picture you will see him and decide for yourself.
